Smoke Pollution

There are different types of pollution but the one that affects us in the Okanagan the most is smoke pollution.  Fires are terrible, endangering many of the different towns.  The air becomes completely red or black. The fires have affected us almost every year.

The reason that we are affected here in the Okanagan is because of the extremely hot summers we have which causes drought and makes it easy for fires to spark up from lightening or cigarettes.  Every year, different people have to get evacuated and even sometimes they lose their houses in the fires.

The aboriginal people used to do controlled burnings to burn the more flammable debris but this practice stopped because of the expense.

  1. This has definitely been a struggle in the Okanagan. It’s hard to think this may be the new normal. I hope we can become more aware, preventative and proactive to prevent huge fires.

  2. We lived in Vernon in the mid 80’s, and never had to consider smoke from forest fires an issue, during our summers. I can’t imagine being confronted with this problem every summer and not being able to go outside and enjoy the beauty and delights of Vernon. I would think that logging practices and drought, due to climate change, might be causes of the forest fires.

  3. I also remember there rarely being fires around here in the 80's and 90's. What do you think could help prevent the spread of fires? Quicker action? More controlled burning? I also wonder how the rise in fires over the world tie into God's word.
