Flooding

Flooding is a dangerous part of living in the Okanagan because after having the heavy snowfall in the winter, it floods and fills the many streams and rivers in the valley which can cause flooding.  The town saw this issue and has added a pond in the BX river which is where most of the flooding was coming from.  How it works is as the river starts to flood, it reaches the pond which has a lot more room to fill up and then continue down the river so it slows down the flooding.  This is called a Sediment Pond.

This year hasnt been too bad and I'm not sure if this is due to the small amount of snow that we had or if our new sediment pond is helping.  If it is from the sediment pond, this is good.  We almost lost our dog last year from the fast running water and I know people have lost loved ones or lost pets.

  1. The sediment pond seems great so far. It will be interesting to see how well it works if we get a high rain spring again like 2017.

  2. During our time living in Vernon, flooding was not an issue. The sediment pond seems like a good solution to the river flooding. It would seem that logging practices and climate change would influence this problem. Wise experimenting should result in helpful solutions.

  3. I didn't know a sediment pond was made to help solve the issue of flooding. How does this also help the local wildlife?
